a. Cause- Muscle spasms can be not providing your body with enough water, glucose, sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium and the blood isn’t able to provide the muscles with the nutrients.
b. Structures- Muscle cells require the nutrients to allow the proteins within them to interact and develop an organized contraction.
c. Function- Muscle cell runs out of energy and fluid and becomes hyperexcitable, resulting in a forceful contraction. Not getting the right supply of the elements can cause the muscle to become irritable and go into spasm.
d. Symptoms- Symptoms can include loss of, or change in sensation in the area affected. There can also be weakness and loss of muscle. Hard to the touch of the muscle being affected. Skeletal muscle spasm usually involves muscles that are being asked to do excessive work. There is acute onset of pain as the muscle contracts. Usually, it's just a momentary repetitive contraction of just a few muscle fibers of a larger muscle in a localized area served by one nerve fiber. This often involves the eyelid, calf, thigh, or thumb.
e. Treatment- If dehydration, drink plenty of water. Make sure you’re taking in enough nutrients and getting the correct amounts of daily vitamins and minerals.To relieve pain, remedies can include heat pressed to the affected area, epsom salt bath, and regular stretching of the area. If muscle spasms occur for elongated period of time, prescription drugs might be prescribed, such as phenytoin or quinine.
